Corporate directors share responsibility for the magnitude of recent problems. Some have failed because they did not have the tools to do the job properly or because they did not fully understand what the job was. Directors should be actively engaged in seeking information and constructively challenging management. Risks that can prevent them from behaving this way include unwillingness to ask questions, complacency, and excessive confidence in the status quo. Rewards include satisfaction in the ability to make a difference when the system needs to be fixed.
