These ETFs are mounting a frontal attack on some of the most fundamental tenets of indexing, namely, (i) that markets are efficient, (ii) that cap weighting is optimal, and (iii) that the lowest fee, lowest turnover, and most broadly diversified funds can be expected to have the highest returns over time. A number of these ETFs have been on the market for a year or more, and it is time to issue tentative report cards on their performance. Do the returns measure up to the hype?
