Abstract
Exchange-traded funds have been a part of the financial landscape for over a decade. As we assess this global expansion of products, assets under management, volume, and users, it inevitably leads to the question, “what next?” Is this growth sustainable? Are all of the “good indexes” taken? Will actively-managed ETFs gain traction? This article gives a long-term perspective on the past decade's development of the product set, and makes some predictions about the future of ETFs in the global capital markets.
